Archaeological Site of Nikopolis

The most famous archaeological site of the region is the well-known roman town of Nikopolis, built by Caesar after his victory on Marcus Antonius and Cleopatra in 31 BC. It shows the transit from the archaic periods to roman periods and the beginning of Rome’s predominance on Hellas.

Apart from the beautiful mosaics, you can also admire among the ruins, a theatre of the 1st century ac, one of the best conserved, wonderful in all its aspects.

The Odeon with the auditorium built on three semi-circular galleries and the villa of Manio Antonino belong to the same period.

The nymphaeum is more recent (3rd century BC), located west to the walls; two rectangular buildings whose façades are not decorated. The thick and well conserved walls are subsequent and date back to the late Byzantine Empire. The current extension dates back to Justinian; while the enigmatic pedestal on which the statue of Augustus was posed, dates back to the roman age.
The archaeological collection exhibited in the local museum is very interesting: among the retrievals we can find a lion of III century AC, Agrippa’s bust, Caesar’s general in the 1st century AC, a roman reproduction of Athena-Minerva, the marble pedestal representing a battle of Amazons and the extraordinary archaic statue of the young Hercules.
